Recruitment Information for Project Assistant Professor

Established in February 2019, Tokyo College is an institute at the University of Tokyo that provides a system for the University and like-minded people from around the globe to discuss and create a shared vision of an ideal future and take joint action to pursue its realization. Under the central theme "Earth and Human Society in 2050," Tokyo College uses the University's international academic network to invite leading scholars, promising early-career researchers, and influential intellectuals from abroad in order to create a collaborative space in which these scholars can work together with faculty, staff, and students at the University to generate new knowledge that will help shape our future. Knowledge created through these collaborations is then provided to the public through Tokyo College lectures.
Tokyo College is recruiting two Project Assistant Professors who will pursue their own academic activities while contributing to the management of Tokyo College and strengthening the University of Tokyo’s international communications capabilities.

1. Number of Recruits and Job Title
Two, Project Assistant Professor

2. Term
The appointment starts as soon as possible after the decision of employment has been made (no later than October 1st, 2022) and is for three years.

3. Probationary Period
Initial six months, with the same compensation and benefits.

4. Job Description
Project Assistant Professors are expected to:
・conduct their own research relating to one or more of Tokyo College’s interdisciplinary research themes (for more information on these themes, please refer to the website);
・contribute to generating a platform for scholars of the University, including Tokyo College, to carry out interdisciplinary collaboration both within and beyond the University of Tokyo;
・plan and carry out Tokyo College’s public outreach activities; and
・help strengthen the University of Tokyo’s international communications capabilities on social issues.

5. Qualifications
・Ph.D. or equivalent in a related field
* Applicants scheduled to obtain a Ph.D. degree before the starting date are eligible.
・Good communication skills in Japanese and English

6. Employment Status and Working Hours
In principle, normal working hours of full-time employees of the University of Tokyo are 7 hours and 45 minutes per day, five days per week. The working hours may be made more flexible by adopting the discretionary labor system (exemption system) for this position at the discretion of the employee.

7. Holidays
Saturdays and Sundays, Japanese statutory public holidays, year-end and New Year holidays (December 29 through January 3), annual paid vacation, sick leave (paid), special vacation (paid).

8. Compensation & Benefits
・Annual gross salary is around JPY 7,000,000, depending on seniority or expertise, plus benefits.
・Commuter allowance: maximum JPY 55,000 per month.
・Social Insurance: Eligible for MEXT* Mutual Aid Association membership, employees’ pension, unemployment insurance, and workers’ accident compensation insurance. (*MEXT: Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology)
・Relocation support for researchers from overseas: Tokyo College will provide support including obtaining a working visa and finding accommodation.
