Side Jobs 

Full-time employees* who wish to engage in part-time work outside of the university are required to apply for and obtain permission from the university in advance by following the established procedures. Examples of part-time work include, but are not limited to, consulting for a private company, working as a visiting lecturer at another university, and working as temporary staff at a medical institution. 

Professors, Project Professors, Associate Professors, Project Associate Professors, Project Assistant Professors and Project Researchers 

 

Part-time/temporary researchers** are not obliged to obtain permission from the university before engaging in additional, external part-time work. However, they are forbidden from engaging in any work that would result in them failing to fulfill their duties at the university or otherwise lead to a loss of trust on the part of the university. 

** Visiting Professors and Visiting Associate Professors 

 

Postdoctoral Fellows are generally not permitted to engage in a side jobexcept when the Director of Tokyo College determines that it directly supports the main theme of their own research. 

 

If you wish to engage in part-time work outside of the university, please consult us at your earliest convenience. 

 

Notes: 

(1) In order to accept a job offer, you are required to get permission from the Director of Tokyo College in advance. For further details on procedures, please contact the Tokyo College team at research.support@tc.u-tokyo.ac.jp. 

(2) Please be aware that the review process takes time. Please contact the Tokyo College team at least one month before your intended start date. 

(3) If your status of residence is "Professor" and you wish to engage in activities other than those specified in the Japanese immigration law, you must apply for and obtain “Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted Under the Status of Residence Previously Granted” (shikakugai katsudō kyoka). 

(4) Please understand that your application may be declined if it conflicts with university regulationsIt is preferable that the Tokyo College team be informed as soon as a potential side job arises, while you still have the option to decline.
