External Research Grants

Researchers at Tokyo College are expected to obtain external funding for their research. Some of the common sources of external funding are listed below.

１. KAKENHI Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research　(https://www.jsps.go.jp/english/e-grants/)

  • This is the most popular research grant provided by MEXT and JSPS.
  • If you meet the requirements, you can apply through the electronic application system via the university headquarters.
  • The deadline is announced by the TC Research Funding Team in the administrative office.
  • Information sessions are held at both Tokyo College and elsewhere on campus.
  • Annual reports are required.

２. Grants and Donations

  • Researchers may apply on their own for grants offered by foundations. If you need certification or a letter from your affiliated organization, please contact the TC Research Funding Team as early as possible.
  • Individual researchers can also receive donations from other individuals or organizations. Please contact the TC Research Funding Team for an application form. Donations to Tokyo College as a whole can be made through the Tokyo College Support Fund (https://utf.u-tokyo.ac.jp/project/pjt138).
  • Individual researchers are not permitted to manage grants and donations on their own. If you are awarded a grant or donation, please contact the Tokyo College office so that the grant or donation may be dispensed to you via the university.

３. Collaborative Research / Entrusted Research (https://www.ducr.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/activity/research/index.html)

  • There are two types of research that are conducted with the private sector: collaborative research and entrusted research. Collaborative research is conducted jointly with a private company, while entrusted research is carried out by the university at the request of a private company.
  • In both cases, a contract is required between the University of Tokyo and the partner organization, rather than an individual researcher. Internal procedures may take some time, please contact the TC Research Collaboration Team as soon as possible if you are interested.

(Note)

  • When accepting external funding, we receive research support expenses to be used for facility maintenance and administrative staff personnel expenses, in addition to expenses directly related to research. The amount varies depending on the amount of direct expenses, but please note that the percentage differs depending on the type of funding.
  • Open calls for funding proposals are available to view on this portal site portal site（UTokyo email address required).
  • When departing Tokyo College, electronics (including personal computers and monitors) and any items surpassing a certain value that were purchased using either Tokyo College funds or external funds must remain with Tokyo College. It may also be possible to transfer ownership to another Japanese institution. For more information, please contact TC Accounting.
