スキル、農村部の生計、持続可能性をテーマとした研究を行っている。地理的にはインドに焦点を当ててきたが、最近は日本やフィリピンでも研究を行っている。社会学を基本としつつ、現在は人文地理学、開発研究、教育学、哲学など、多様な分野の議論に取り組んでいる。
従前は持続可能な農業運動の社会的・政治的力学、地域の都市開発、農村から都市への移住、若者に関する問題などのプロジェクトに取り組んできた。
より最近の研究テーマ、そして現在の主な研究対象は、スキルである。スキルを単なる技術的な現象（道具的価値しか持たない経済資産）としてではなく、私たちが周囲の世界を理解し価値づけるプロセスに不可欠な、意味とアイデンティティの重要な源泉として捉えている。この観点から、スキルの開発や活用を育む社会的・空間的要因や、ある種のスキルがより持続可能で思いやりのある「世界内存在（being-in-the-world）」のあり方につながる可能性に関心を持っている。農業、養蜂、手工芸、学術、ITなどのスキルの研究を通じて、これらのテーマを探求している。
東京カレッジでは、共同研究プロジェクト「持続可能性と社会」のコーディネーターを務めている。
