医療人類学の博士号、栄養学の修士号を有し、今までに査読付き論文を380本以上発表。特に支援の行き届かない地域社会における慢性疾患の一次予防に尽力している。これまでに20件以上の革新的な介入研究を行い、食環境の改善や栄養教育の推進を通じてネイティブ・アメリカン、ファースト・ネーション、イヌイット、太平洋諸島民など先住民コミュニティや、ボルチモア市など都市部における肥満や糖尿病対策に取り組んできた。

文化的情報、教育的・環境的アプローチ、さらにシステム科学的手法を統合し、政策変更の影響をモデル化することで食習慣の大幅な改善を導いてきた。学校、街角の小売店、レストラン、教会、地域団体など多様な場を対象に複数の介入試験を主導し、食品購入や摂取行動の改善にも成功。近年は、持続可能性と地域社会の参加を重視し、健康的な食品へのアクセスを改善するためのデジタルアプリケーションの開発にも取り組んでいる。現在、複数の研究助成を主導しており、地域のフードパントリー、個人経営のレストラン、小規模小売店と協力して食品アクセスを改善する取り組みを進めている。
