30年前に「セキュリティ化（securitization）」という概念を提唱し、安全保障研究において「コペンハーゲン学派」として知られる理論を共同で発展させた。この理論は、宗教から気候変動まで、世界中で多様な問題に応用されてきた。では、これらの問題が「安全保障」の問題となるかどうか、そのタイミングや方法が、どのような違いを生むのか？
東京カレッジ滞在中は、日本の学界が世界をリードする分野である「経済安全保障」に関して実証的な研究に取り組む。また、その分析を理論的に支えるエンジンである「言語行為論」を深化させるため、哲学者や言語学者との議論も行う。一般に「政治は言葉によって営まれる」と理解されているが、とりわけ近年、政治的言説がますます浮遊的・空洞的になる傾向が見られる今、政治的アクターが特定の課題をめぐって意味を形成し、それを動員しようと争う深層的な構造を分析することが重要となっている。
セキュリティ化理論は国際関係論の分野で大きな成果を収めたが、現在、この理論をより一般的な政治理論へと拡張しようと試みている。この課題には、東京カレッジが可能にする学際的かつ国際的な協働が不可欠である。
