ミシガン大学アナーバー校、人類学・美術史学科、ペニー・W・スタンプス美術大学、ロボット工学研究所名誉教授（2020年1月現在）。また、東京カレッジの連携研究者、ワシントン大学シアトル校人類学部および日本学科の連携教員でもある。元『Critical Asian Studies』日本版編集長で、現在は編集委員会（http://criticalasianstudies.org）を務める。歴史人類学者・人類学史家であり、7冊の著書と90を超える論文やブックチャプターは、17世紀から現在に至るまで、学際的なテーマを幅広く扱っている。著書はドイツ語、フィンランド語、フランス語、ヘブライ語、日本語、韓国語、スペイン語に翻訳され、インタビューやエッセイの形で国際ニュースや非学術メディアに定期的に寄稿している。
シアトルに在住し、現在、日本の優生学の文化史、芸術、科学、技術、性・ジェンダーシステム、「人工知能」と「自律性」の神秘化、日本やその他の国における人間とロボットの相互作用のさまざまな側面について研究、執筆、記事の編集を行っている。ロボット工学に関するフィールドワークとアーカイブ研究の延長線上には、感情的なAIと身体化された親密さの批判的探求があり、アルゴリズムによる抽象化の問題や、それに伴うAIアプリケーションにおけるニュアンスや交差性の欠如の調査も含まれる。また、日本を拠点とする新しいプロジェクトでは、1920年代から2020年代にかけての出産のテクノロジーを探求している。
